Hospital stay in Luxembourg: standard room or first class?
The CNS covers treatment and the stay in a standard room. A private room and the higher fees that come with it are yours to pay, unless you have top-up cover. The 2026 figures and what the main top-up plans provide.
Guide updated: September 2026
What the CNS covers
Except in an emergency, you choose your hospital freely, and your doctor among those practising there. The country has four hospital centres and several specialised facilities. Treatment, outpatient or inpatient, and the stay in a standard room are covered in full; the hospital bills the CNS directly.
- Doctors’ fees: 100% of official tariffs for a stay of at least one night or in day hospital; 88% for outpatient care (100% under 18).
- Payment: each doctor issues a bill. If the stay exceeds three days or the bill exceeds €100, the doctor can send it straight to the CNS; otherwise you pay and claim the reimbursement.
- Child in hospital: under 14, the CNS covers a bed for the accompanying parent, but not the parent’s meals.
- Several operations during the same stay: costs are covered only if the main operation is covered itself.
What you pay in a standard room
A contribution of €26.79 per day started, for up to 30 days per calendar year, so €803.70 at most. It does not apply under 18 or to the first 12 days of a childbirth stay. In day hospital, it is €13.40 a day. On top come comfort services, such as telephone, television or internet access, and whatever health insurance does not cover: an extended stay while waiting for a care-home place, or cosmetic surgery without the approval of the social security medical board.
First class: what a private room really costs
A private room, known as first class, brings two costs the CNS never reimburses:
- a daily supplement, set by the hospital according to the room’s comfort;
- a 66% surcharge on the fees of every doctor involved, surgeon and anaesthetist alike. On fees of €1,000 at the official tariff, the surcharge comes to €660.
Two caveats: the surcharge cannot apply if you are in a private room for medical reasons, and procedures in the operating theatre can also be surcharged if you move into a private room within 48 hours of the operation or of leaving intensive care.
What top-up plans provide
| Plan | In hospital | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| CMCM, Régime commun | Covers the balance left by the CNS, hospital costs and fees, for outpatient care, day hospital or a stay; first class only for a serious operation or treatment | No medical questionnaire, family co-insured; accompanying costs for a child under 18 |
| CMCM, with PrestaPlus | First class covered whatever the stay: minor or medium surgery, childbirth, hospitalisation without surgery | Also contributes to ambulance costs in Luxembourg, up to €150 a year if the CNS authorised the transport |
| DKV, Hospital Health | First class, private room, telephone and TV; free choice of doctor, including the head physician, fee overruns covered | Ambulance up to 400 km, rooming-in for a child up to 12, €30 per day in hospital |
| DKV, Compact, Plus or Easy Health | First-class hospitalisation, treatment by the head physician with Plus and Easy Health | Daily hospital allowance; dental and eyewear on top |
| Foyer, medicis hospi+ or confort | Hospital care, related treatment from 30 days before to 90 days after, free choice of hospital throughout Europe | Private room or a daily allowance per day in hospital; report the stay before admission |
| AXA, OptiSoins | From the Start plan, hospitalisation reimbursed at 100% of the costs actually paid; free choice of doctor and hospital in Europe with prior agreement | Childcare, domestic help and pet care during and after the stay |
Ceilings and conditions vary by plan and change over time: read the terms before signing. Our CMCM, DKV, Foyer and AXA profiles cover the rest of their range.
Before a planned hospital stay
- Check what is covered: the hospital must tell you the financial terms of your stay, including what you will pay.
- Choose your room knowingly: standard, or first class with its supplement and the 66% surcharge.
- Tell your top-up insurer before admission: Foyer requires it, and DKV lets you request cover in its app.
- Mind the waiting period if your policy is recent: three months at the CMCM, generally three months at DKV, except after an accident.
- Treatment abroad: a planned stay outside Luxembourg needs prior CNS authorisation (form S2). For a referral to a specialist abroad, the CMCM offers direct billing in its partner hospitals in France, Germany and Belgium.

Your questions, answered
Does the CNS reimburse a private room?
No. The CNS covers a stay in a standard room. In a private room, the daily supplement and the 66% surcharge on doctors’ fees are yours to pay, unless top-up cover pays them or the private room is medically justified.
How much does a day in hospital cost in Luxembourg?
In a standard room, a personal contribution of €26.79 a day in 2026, for up to 30 days a year, so €803.70 at most. Nothing under 18, nothing for the first 12 days of a childbirth stay, and €13.40 a day in day hospital.
Does the CMCM cover first class?
The Régime commun covers it for a serious operation or medical treatment. For minor or medium surgery, childbirth or a stay without surgery, you need the optional PrestaPlus cover.
Can I choose my hospital and surgeon?
Yes, except in an emergency: you choose the hospital, and your doctor among those practising there. Some top-up plans extend that free choice to hospitals across Europe, sometimes subject to prior agreement.
