CNS reimbursement calculator: what you really pay

Enter a year of health expenses at the official tariff: the tool applies the CNS’s 2026 rates, item by item, and tells you what is left for you to pay, hospital daily charge and additional reimbursement included.

Guide updated: October 2026

The National Health Fund reimburses a fixed percentage of an official tariff, item by item, and leaves you a personal contribution to pay. This calculator adds up, over a year, what the CNS covers and what is left for you, at the 2026 rates published on its official pages. Enter your expenses at the fee-schedule tariff, choose the profile, and read the result line by line.

Refundable on requestincome?

Amounts at the official fee-schedule tariff, for a calendar year. Under 18, consultations, dental care, physiotherapy and psychotherapy are reimbursed at 100% and the hospital daily charge does not apply. Adult dental care: annual allowance of €83.90 reimbursed at 100%, 88% above it. Prostheses: 80%, or 100% with one preventive check-up a year over the previous two years. Frame: €30 at most, every three years. Hospital daily charge: €26.79 a day, 30 days a year at most; day hospital: €13.40 a day. Private room: room supplement and 66% surcharge on fees at your expense.

Additional reimbursement (article 154bis of the CNS statutes): if your contributions for the year, co-insured members included, exceed 2.5% of your annualised contributory income for the previous year, the CNS refunds the difference on request, online, from 1 May of the year concerned; the income taken into account never falls below a legal minimum, so there is nothing to claim under €518.18 of contributions (2026). Counted here: consultations, medicines, physiotherapy, psychotherapy and dental care except prostheses. Indicative estimate: laboratory tests (100%), charges above the tariff, personal convenience supplements and frequency limits are not modelled.

How to read the result

  • Left for you to pay: the sum of your personal contributions, the hospital daily charge and the comfort costs the CNS never reimburses.
  • The CNS covers: what it reimburses you, or pays directly to the provider when direct billing or immediate direct payment applies.
  • Share reimbursed: the ratio between what the CNS reimburses and the total of tariffed care. The hospital daily charge and the private room are left out: the stay itself is covered, only those contributions remain due.
  • Additional reimbursement: if your counted contributions exceed 2.5% of your contributory income for the previous year, the CNS refunds the difference on request. Enter your gross monthly income to estimate it.

The rates applied

Consultations, nursing and routine dental care at 88%, medicines at 80% or 40% depending on their category, physiotherapy at 70% for a common adult condition and 100% for a serious condition or rehabilitation after surgery, psychotherapy at 70%, dental prostheses at 80% or 100% with a yearly preventive check-up, frame up to €30. Under 18, most care moves to 100% and the €26.79 daily hospital charge does not apply. All these rates, and those the calculator does not model, are gathered in our complete table of CNS reimbursement rates.

What the calculator does not know

It reasons at the agreed tariff: if a provider charges more, for instance a personal convenience supplement or a prosthesis above the tariff, the difference is entirely yours to pay. It does not model laboratory tests, reimbursed at 100%, medicines reimbursed at 100%, frequency limits, or alternative medicine, which the CNS does not reimburse. The agreements between the CNS and doctors expire on 31 October 2026 and are to be replaced by Grand-Ducal regulations: see the note in our reimbursement table. To reduce what is left, a top-up health plan takes over on first class, dental and eyewear: our health insurance comparison sets CMCM, DKV, Foyer and AXA side by side, and our articles on hospital stays in Luxembourg and dental care detail what they add.

Your questions, answered

Why is my consultation only reimbursed at 88%?

The CNS statutes provide for a 12% personal contribution on adult consultations and visits; under 18, reimbursement is 100%. With a doctor who uses immediate direct payment, that share is all you pay.

Is the hospital daily charge reimbursed?

No. In a standard room, treatment and the stay are covered, but you pay €26.79 a day, for up to 30 days a year; nothing under 18 or for the first 12 days of a childbirth stay. A top-up health plan can cover it.

How does the additional reimbursement work?

If your personal contributions over a calendar year, co-insured members included, exceed 2.5% of your annualised contributory income for the previous year, the CNS refunds the part above the threshold. You apply online, from 1 May of the year concerned and before the end of the second following year.

Is what I enter stored?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser; nothing is transmitted or kept.
